Cacúlo: In Context | Em Contexto | Mewn Cyd-destun is the first of two catalogues produced to accompany the official touring exhibitions at Llantarnam Grange and Ruthin Craft Centre. This volume focuses on contextualising the work produced up until this point of the project.
The catalogues includes an introduction by Toni De Jesus which explores the origins of the project, his residencies in Madeira, and the trajectory that led to the inaugural exhibition at MUDAS – Museu de Arte Contemporânea da Madeira in 2022.
The central essay, Between-Places: The Ceramics of Toni De Jesus and the Madeiran Cultural Landscape by Martinho Mendes seeks to situate De Jesus’ practice within the cultural and geographical context of Madeira by tracing the evolution of the work produced in the island up to the point point of this project. Martinho Mendes is a teacher, visual artist, museologist and curator. He is currently a reseracher at Centro de Estudos de História do Atlãntico - Alberto Vieira in Funchal, Madeira.
The publication is illustrated throughout with imagery of work in progress, studio shots as well as installation shots at MUDAS.
This project and publication was made possible with the Create Funding from Arts Council of Wales.
